Many felons are great artists. They have artistic talents that they have honed while they were incarcerated, as well as when they were not. Being able to make money from your artistic talents as a felon may be a challenge for some people. The good news is that there are art grants you can apply for, including the $50,000 Creative Capital Artist Grant.

Grants provide a great way to help meet your financial needs, while you are able to still continue doing what you love. If you love to create art, but don’t find that earning money from your efforts comes easily, you may want to consider applying for an art grant. The $50,000 Creative Capital Artist Grant is one of many such grants that are aimed at supporting an artist with their efforts.

About the Artist Grant for Felons

The Creative Capital Artist Grant is open to any artists who would like to apply, and who meet the application criteria. The goal of this grant is to help artists realize their vision. They provide grants of up to $50,000 each. One person can receive as much as $100,000 for their one project. The grant has helped many people over the years with their artistic goals and projects.

They have been giving out these artist grants since 1999. Since then, they have given away nearly $50 million in grants to support artists. Those funds have gone to over 740 different artists during that time, funding nearly 600 artistic projects. Their mission is to continue supporting artists who want to be bold and have great ideas for projects.

Here is some information to keep in mind about the $50,000 Creative Capital Artist Grant:

  • There are numerous discipline areas that the grant supports. Some of these include artists who focus animation, architecture and design, artistic activism, craft, comedy, dance, dance film, digital media, ecological art, games, documentarily films, and much more. There are many areas that artists can focus on and still be eligible for this grant.
  • You will need to become very organized with your project goals when applying for this artist grant. The application will need to be detailed with what your project goals are and what you will be using the grant funds for in supporting it.
  • Once you submit your grant application it will be reviewed. In that first review a determination will be made if it should go on to a second round of reviews by others. There are ten people who will end up reviewing your project information if you make it past the first review.
  • There is a timeline that is followed each year for the grants that are received by the organization. February is the month when grant applications are submitted each year. At that point, they receive their initial review. If they make it to the next round, they will be reviewed a second time in July. If they make it past that round, they will go before a panel review in October. A decision on who will receive the yearly grants is made every November, and the names of the artists who will get a grant are released every December.
  • There are questions you need to answer when writing up your grant application information. These questions include explaining such things as your main influences, how your project will take form, the specific audience for your project, how it can be used for personal growth, and how the funds will support your mission.
  • To qualify for the artist grant, a felon must be at least 25 and be a citizen or legal resident. You also need to be a working artist. This is not open to art institutes. This is a grant for individual artists.
  • There is no fee to submit your grant application with Creative Capital.

Getting Creative

This organization provides large grants to help support the goals and dreams of artists. Felons who are artists and have a great idea for a project they would like to do should consider applying. Once the application has been submitted you have to be patient in waiting to hear if you make it to each round, but if you do it can be quite rewarding.

The grant award given out by Creative Capital is substantial, giving felons a great opportunity to be able to make their artistic dream come true. It’s easy to apply for the grant, it’s free to submit your application, and you have nothing to lose by giving it a try. Gather your thoughts on the type of project you would like to work on, and seek the funding to help make it a reality. If you miss the deadline to apply this year, you have plenty of time put your game plan together for the next one.
